Jack's New Ear Gear: A Book of Ling Six Sounds
Illustrated by Renee Coughlin
Jack's New Ear Gear is the story of a young boy who is just a bit afraid to use his new hearing aids for the first time. With the help of his family and community, he overcomes his fear as he discovers all the wonderful sounds there are to hear in his world. Jack's New Ear Gear features the phonemes, or sounds, that are used in the Ling Six Sound Test to assess a young child's ability to hear the low, middle, and high frequency sounds that are essential for language development. These sounds, which include [m], [ah], [oo], [ee], [sh] and [s], are paired with corresponding pictures throughout the book to encourage parents and teachers to use the Ling Six exercise in a fun and engaging way with all children.
